Rick Monzon grew up in a Los Angeles area housing tract that years later influenced him to make suburbia the main theme of my work as an artist. Hot Rods, psychedelic poster art and the wonderful world of storybook illustration also shaped his young sensibilities. Monzon went on to study illustration at the Art Center College of Design. This led to a career in commercial art, gradually drifting into fine art as a painter.
As a native Californian, Rick chooses his subject matter and gets his inspiration from what he sees around him. It might be as simple as a beautiful sunset in the hills or a surreal twist on a day at the beach. Rick does try to imbue all his work with a feeling of dreaminess, inviting the viewer to take that slight step away from reality.
