Gordon, Toby

Toby Gordon lives and paints on the coast of southern Maine. Her work in oils, watercolors, and multimedia is continually influenced by the surrounding landscape—the atmosphere and changing light, the wide horizons, the particular time of day and year. There is an ongoing connection between what she sees and feels and how that is translated into paint. It is a matter too of being as present as possible, of allowing the painting to talk to her, of being in conversation with it.
“I trust in the process of painting—of seeing and responding to what unfolds as I layer, scrape down, paint over. It is this conversation with the work that interests me most—what do I have to say, what is the canvas saying back to me? And how can we, together, create a conversation, an experience, that matters?”

A book editor for over thirty years, painting in her off hours, Toby now paints full-time, joyful that her days in the studio are filled with color, shape, and texture. And no words.
