Avoid Legal Issues on Canvas Transfers

In the United States, the right to produce a canvas transfer of an image is contingent on the approval of the copyright holder of that particular artwork. You may be subject to legal proceedings if you produce and/or sell canvas transfers of an unauthorized image.

To help avoid problems, please review the following guidelines:

If you already have the print in hand, first check the credit lines at the bottom of the print to see if canvas transfers are specifically prohibited for that item. (Note: this is only a first step. Absence of a written prohibition on the print does not necessarily mean the image is available for canvas transfer).

Check with us to see if the artist and/or publisher has said that transfers are allowed. For individual prints, call us at (800) 532-2333. For bulk checks, please contact your account representative.

Do not offer canvas transfers on your website (or in catalogues, advertisements, or other marketing materials) for any item that is not allowed for canvas transfer. Even if you never actually sell a canvas transfer for a prohibited image, you may be exposed to legal proceedings merely by advertising the service for a prohibited item.

Use a broad definition of “canvas transfers,” to include any process meant to give a canvas look and/or texture to a print or poster, including films, gels, brushstrokes, etc.
